A man who was convicted of shooting a five-year-old girl in the face has been given a long jail sentence in a court in the US state of Michigan.

Keyon Timmons, 30, was found guilty of shooting Jordayna Barret in the face on September 9, 2009, but had maintained his innocence.

The jury heard how Timmons had threatened to kill his girlfriend, Jordayna's aunt, as well as her mother and two children.

As his girlfriend was not in her trailer home when he arrived to confront her, he instead shot Jordayna in the face.

The bullet went through her cheek and neck but caused severe injuries and trauma, which have required intensive treatment.

Even though Jordayna survived the gunshot, Timmons has been sentenced to 80 years in prison.

Timmons was convicted of murder in 1997 after shooting a man in the head.

He was allowed out on parole after serving only seven years for the murder.
